Latest video:
Finishing up the sauna steam room build by fabricating a proper seat from Spruce and Aspen I fell and milled on my homemade band sawmill. Since the wood is still wet it has to dry before I can sand the planks down to smooth finish and anchor them to the frame. But the sauna is already usable as is. Heat shield would be great idea also behind the chimney although it has a shield on it already. Caution never hurts I guess. Thanks for watching and check back for future videos. Don't forget to subscribe and hit that bell button, too! Cheers!

Can you use pine. Is Aspen cheap. All recommendations are saying cedar or spruce. Do you have too have vents for sauna only. Looks Class by the way 😁
Donn DIY
Donn DIY 5 місяців tagasi
You can use pine on the walls you don't touch since it will produce sticky sap when heated. So using spruce, pine etc is not recommended. Aspen and Alder is preferred since these species are clean and do not emit any vapors or fluids when heated. But I'm no expert, I searched for the info I could and did accordingly.

if you apply the "nut-feder" vertically instead of horizontally - you could save time and probably wood because you would have equal lengths of the nut feder rods all over the sauna (but the ceiling, maybe). I prefer also removable benches and floor decks and not fixed, so you may take them out and wash them and the floor in the bottom of them which get very dirty (and may even stink...) with time due to the sweat. These are suggestions for your next sauna. By now you made a nice job. Yossi Behagen, Danmar - Finnsauna, Israel

One person would need at least 500 mm of sitting space, so it's almost two feet, multiplied by six makes it 6x2 feet seat width. :D

Just saying that maybe cover the heat shield screws? I have heard a story that they may conduct so much heat that screws may ignite the wood behind the shield. Great build anyways!
Al gebra
Al gebra 2 aastat tagasi
Reflective metal absorbs very little short-wave infrared radiation - which is what that wood heater will be pumping out. He left an air gap between the heat shield and the wall, so what little (radiant) heat a screw does absorb and conduct will mostly bleed off via conduction/convection on the shaded side/cavity before it reaches the wall. The temperature of a screw as it enters the wall will thus tend to be close to air temperature. Since most saunas don't go above 120°C and wood ignites at ~180°C I don't think it will be a problem. Of course if he made the mistake of painting or lacquering the screw heads, or if the screws weren't made of stainless steel (and would thus be prone to rust in the humid conditions), then that would be a whole different story. Emissivity might increase to the point where they absorb enough radiation from the wood heater to become a problem. We used regular 'bright' steel nails in a sauna in the 1970s. Over time, the heads rusted. About 20 years later, when we replaced the cladding, we discovered that the wood around the nails near the heater had carbonised. How close we came to ignition and an actual fire, we don't know - but we've used stainless ever since with no problem.
