Milling furring strips on my homemade band sawmill for the sauna house steam room siding. Needed these ASAP like everything else so I used what I had laying around - spruce logs in my backyard.

Did this sawmill get painted? The elements, snow and rain can destroy it over time otherwise. Maybe, even a rain/sun shade over the engine frame. Looking for the update.

what a great tool . i have an idea at 420 on the timer look to the left. where the vertical support is - you could put a ruler on there so the blade distance from the deck could be measured. and then it would be easy to make exact measured cuts with ease? just a thought

Yeah it's the camera that throws off the Eyeball. you did a beautiful job on building your saw mill, you need to start up and build saw mills and sell them, how many sawmill manufactures do you have in your country. The two bars on the left which to stop the logs...it has an angle cut, set pointing outward? Should it be set the other way? Please explain. Thank you. I saw the water feeding to the blade....
Donn DIY
Donn DIY Aasta tagasi
These angle cuts pointing outward are for turning the logs on the mill so the log slides over the ends better. That's all. Thanks for watching!

When you trailer your logs next to your Mill wouldn't it be easier to have your trailer the same height so you can roll it off your trailer to your Millthis will save one step from you putting them on the ground and rolling them up on top of the mill again love you Mill but your process makes me tired
Donn DIY
Donn DIY Aasta tagasi
I haul my logs beforehand and set'em up like this for milling which I do independently of hauling. Thus the added action required. And I want to use my trailer for other things so I don't keep the logs on it for extended period of time. You can do better, you don't have to watch my exhausting version of operating the sawmill. ;)

Since you have established the fact that you are fully capable of fabricating machinery etc., I would strongly suggest that you should construct a gantry with wheels which has the ability to lift above and position heavy logs onto the sawmill's bed. The system you are currently using to drag and load the logs, appears to not have the strength needed to safely drag and pull the logs that you are positioning for milling. A scenario which makes for a dangerous situation if it is not corrected in the near future. The more you continue to use the system, the weaker the cable will become and the more apt the cable is to break when pulling a heavy log onto the mill's bed. Hope this helps.

Idea. Take 2 tooth brushes, zip tie them together with the bristles facing each other. Oil the chain, slip the tooth brushes on so they cover the chain and cycle the chain through them. This cleans and distributes the oil evenly onto the chain. You can use it on the cables as well.

awesome sawmill, it looks like it runs very well, do you have to adjust the blade tension much because of the air tires?
Donn DIY
Donn DIY 2 aastat tagasi
Not much. I just tension the blade up to a point where it's harder to push down between the guide rollers. It has worked pretty well so far like this.

I like your saw. I built my own several years ago (eepost.info/my/video/z4ueeKuknWeqvXc.html) , but looking this machine, i want to build a new one. Autumn is the milling season for me aswell. I like the industrial looking on your saw but please paint it.

This was mesmerizing and satisfying to watch. Have you considered a double edge band saw to make a cut on the return pass?
leemer1
leemer1 2 aastat tagasi
@Donn DIY I bet you something like the blue windshield deicer might work or something alcohol based.
Donn DIY
Donn DIY 2 aastat tagasi
I've heard that people are using winter diesel fuel when milling lumber in winter at below zero temperatures. It probably lubricates the guide rollers better than water and is better anti-pitch build-up agent too I guess.
leemer1
leemer1 2 aastat tagasi
Plus nothing beats the smell of fresh sawn wood. Yeah I agree a double edged blade would require a redesign especially of the tensioner rollers. Your mill works just fine for your purpose and hope to see more of it in action. Did you come up with a plan for blade lubricant/cooling if you wanted to saw in the middle of winter where water would freeze? Maybe a drip feed of chain saw bar lubricant? Then again if you used hot water it might work ok.
Donn DIY
Donn DIY 2 aastat tagasi
I find it satisfying to watch saw milling videos on EEpost, too, maybe it's the blade going through the wood in a close-frame creating perfect rectangular shaped lumber. Or the whining sound and the sawdust flying. I don't know. I haven't thought about the double edge blade since it would require some serious re-design on the sawmill. I'm happy with this simple and well-tested concept of a band sawmill. I presume the double edge bands might be more expensive too? I don't really know but I'm just guessing. :D Your idea is really good for industrial work but for my needs it would be overkill I think. ;) Thus I don't have hydraulics or any electric systems installed on the mill. I'm cheap that way. ;)

Dennis Cronk 2 aastat tagasi
Donn, I'm glad you're getting back to the sauna. It looks like just the right thing needed to relax in after a long day of painting. Being situated next to the pond, makes it really easy to jump in and cool off I bet. Now that you have your finish coat of rust colored "primer" on all the metal parts, I can finally let you know when my passport paperwork is completed. I'll be happy to finally be coming into town (Country?) to help you get the painting done on that bandsaw. 😉 Stock up on the cheap import beer and consider making a machine to effectively crush aluminum cans a case at a time. It's a long flight and I'm bound to be very, very thirsty. Lol On the flight over I'll try to refine my pitch to you on how we can start another EEpost channel for you when you have out-of-town guests make cameo appearances to give a helping hand on your projects. What do you think of Donndiwh? (did it with help) Oh, I have some good news on my end, too. In a small window of opportunity, I was able to convince my wife that I had to buy my lathe already. With Fall starting, I told her I was going to go out to the store and get something that would help in peeling apples really fast. What? I know what you're thinking. You probably are thinking that it wasn't nice to deceive her like that . Well, I stuck to my integrity and made sure that it had a big enough motor to run 3 phase power. Once I find a jig small enough to peel an apple without making applesauce, I'm sure it will peel really fast as promised. I hate seeing her slave over a kitchen sink with a paring knife when there's so much laundry to be done around the house. Lol
Donn DIY
Donn DIY 2 aastat tagasi
Hahaa! I'm cracked up, again. I guess there's no need for another channel - I could post these appearances right here. I could use some help since you've noticed I still haven't painted the mill yet. You can stay up to 90 or 180 days in Estonia without visa. I'm glad to hear you could get yourself a lathe, it's a treat and I assure you will never want to part ways with it, be it covered in apple juice or not. :D Deciding on your actions you're kinda digging a hole for yourself there. I wish you all the best, especially an understanding wife who I see you already have, thus I'm happy for you. :D
