Latest video:
Do it yourself auto repair: fixing a 1999 Opel Astra front end damage gotten from a collision with a deer. At first it looked way worse than we thought - after all it was a proper crash. In closer inspection we saw that by changing a few parts it can be made drivable again. This car's body is still in great shape, it is almost rust-free which is a miracle itself in this salty part of the world and it has only 100K on the odometer - original mileage. So all in all - despite there is no tow hitch and it has no pickup bed nor proper cargo space one can still use it for commuting. We fixed it with my brother who brought in spare parts the same morning and by the evening we got it pretty much buttoned up but there was something we both didn't like - the paint job on the replacement hood, and it was rusty also. So my brother sanded the peeling lacquer and removed all the rust, and finally we painted it mat black since the original metallic green paint was a bit expensive. I've always wanted a car with a black "tuning" hood. Now we're only missing banded / widened steel rims painted white with nice low profile wide tires on. :)

Is the deer ok ? You should show the final result with the black hood. Black hood was first used in the monte carlo rally, where pilots were always blinded by the photographs flashes reflecting on their hoods,so they painted them flat black for the nights races. It's old trick, from the 60's.

Good morning Donn, glad you were able to do the repairs yourself. Hunting deer with a vehicle is not cheap. I have been very fortunate, I haven’t hit one good enough to do damage to my vehicles. Glad no people were injured in the making of this video. 😉🤫. Thanks for sharing with us, you put your heart and soul into making these great videos along with stained seats and dirty drawers 😩🤣. Be safe out there.👍👍.

Same thing happened to my son's car, except it was sheep. we replaced the bonnet/hood and as it was a different colour too we wrapped it with a carbon fiber look wrap. It only cost about $20 and actually looked pretty good.

You didn't show fixing the headlights? I have used fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin (formulated for plastic) successfully in the past. It would be fun to see if one of those plastic 'welder's would work on that grade of plastic. Good thing no one was hurt. Generally a deer sized animal (moose are especially troublesome) will have their legs crumple and the main body will come right through the windshield doing terrible damage to the occupants.

I guess you are lucky that the airbag didn't went off, would be a heck more work, replacing the unit and cleaning the car inside...some plastics and a beam&hood are a bargain in a deer accident... A mate from work had a deer into the front of his '02 BMW in the late 70ies, the parts of it were up to the firewall... :-P Thx for the vid... :-D

After seeing the damage done by the unprotected body of a deer. Isn't it wonderful how much safer we are in these newer cars? And that was a deer NOT another car. Think I'll keep my 1964 Chevy and Dodge

There’s a lot of videos comparing old cars vs new cars in accidents. I would prefer an airbag in my face every day in exchange for a steering wheel in my forehead and an engine in my lap once. Old cars are just crap when it comes to passenger safety.

Compared to many manufacturers that hood to fender gap is perfect. You can improve it by moving the front top of the fender in a bit but that’s only if you want it better than new. 😁
