Latest video:
In this tracked amphibious vehicle build episode I'm working on the sheet metal that gets welded to the tube frame I built a couple of episodes back. Plasma cutter gets worked harder and steel gets cut into smaller pieces. I haven't neglected the almighty and powerful angle grinder. It will remain my main tool for sure. But using more advanced technology is always a time saver. Join me on my metal fabrication adventures and please consider subscribing for more. Cheers!

@Derek Samuel there are several ways 1) changing the number of track pads 2)varying where the pad connecting links attach 3)varying tire pressures 4) add an additional tensioner wheel pivoting link/ cam linkage

I worked with an older guy building a twin engine 6 seat executive aircraft, from scratch for Ted Smith Aircraft in southern calif. back in the early 60s. Joe Wojic was his name. The plans for the aircraft had been reduced to dozens of working blue prints. But joe and I were tasked with building the air frame jigs which had to be mathematically perfect. In all dimensions. Joe used a surveying instrument to begin the jig construction. The work took months. Much like Donn DIY amphibious project , each piece was hand made by Joe and myself. I learned more valuable techniques in the two years I worked with Joe than the rest of my aircraft mechanic career which spanned 25 full time years in the aircraft building business. You talents are equal to Joe Wojic . You are a master at a very young age. I was first learning the things you know almost by intuition. I am now 77

In the us i put 1~3 psi of air pressure into my axles to keep the water out of them. Even though the air leaks out it still keeps the water out. The leaks are so slow that the reserve of the compressor can keep up easy. I got the idea from the US military vehicles that do somthing similar. I could never get even the best seals to keep 100% of the water out, but the air pressure works great. If your stuffing box idea does not work you can try it maybe? Cheers from USA, Leo

You sound crazy when you comment on a video which title clearly says "Tracked Amphibious Vehicle" and still talk about cars and planes. If anything - it is close to a boat in the sense it has a hull. But it's a tracked amphibious all terrain vehicle just like a Canadian ARGO. Look it up! 🖖

So why not just connect all 4 points of road wheel axles and sheet metal over that giving it more buoyancy, increase its strength, simplyfy whole frame design and maybe even add bit storage space in there? If all this was for rims to pass trough, just remove center of the rim, swap it around and weld it together. Turned rims are nothing new and would work fine in 35km/h tank like this. Also front is so boxy that huge amounts of efficiency is lost on water.

Unfortunately, the short circuit MIG welding process will NOT produce a watertight weld as it leaves micro holes. Just ask the guy (me) that welded a 12' diameter tank, 24' long, with MIG. When finished, it was pressure tested at 3 PSI and soap solution. To my dismay, there were hundreds of soap bubble "beards" growing on the welds. All of these welds had been prepped for complete joint penetration. Trying to fix these leaks was almost impossible. When a leak was welded, the leak would just move to the beginning or end of the new weld. Since the tank was scheduled for delivery shortly, my crew and I spent the weekend welding the tank seams from the inside with 6011 stick welds. When pressure tested again there were NO leaks! Shielded core wire WILL produce watertight welds with the MIG process. It would be a better choice for water tightness at the cost of a dirty environment (smoke & slag). Still, gotta ADMIRE DonnDIY's skill and inventiveness. I really want to see this machine GO!
Donn DIY
Donn DIY Aasta tagasi
I've welded diesel tanks before, got them to a point with a MIG/MAT welder where it didn't leak without too much effort. Did not pressure test it though. Not gonna pressure test this hull too, it just has to keep water out for a period of time so wheb crossing a small lake or a river. And I'm going to install bilge pumps too. So no worries.

Bando Aasta tagasi
You have said that you have calculated the displacement and ballparked the weight. Exactly how do those numbers compare? It seems to me that if this would at all float, it would do so very very deep in the water, putting your waterline dangerously close to the edge.
Bando Aasta tagasi
@Donn DIY Thanks, I understand. Very interesting!
Donn DIY
Donn DIY Aasta tagasi
Take your time and look at the picture in the beginning of the video one more time - there will be an upper edge in addition to this 1.3 m3 you already see. The vehicle will weigh around 700 - 800 kg max. It will float and I predict the water line slightly under the top of the track which is normal.

Pine Stumps
Pine Stumps Aasta tagasi
@Donn DIY Yeah I would agree that angle iron is most economic and probably gives the most traction. When you get the vehicle done, do you think you could run some pull force tests? It would be neat to see from a vehicle weight vs pull force how much better angle iron is for traction. Keep at it!
