Machining & threading custom axles and turning flanges in the lathe from 47 mm / ~2" solid round bar and 12 mm / 1/2" steel sheet so I'm able to attach the 4x108 mm bolt pattern 14" steel rims / drive wheels to the tub of the tracked amphibious vehicle. Again, the plasma cutter is still on hold and thus I'm stuck using angle grinders again. The custom made wheel hubs I turned and MIG welded in this powertrain are sealed from the outside environment and preventing water from entering the hull / tub of the all terrain vehicle. The other wheel hubs are bought ready-made and already waterproof from a local trailer shop and will have six 4x100 mm bolt pattern Opel steel rims & tires as idler wheels. These however will not penetrate the hull of the tracked vehicle. To transmit the power from the skid steering unit I fabricated and shortened from a LADA 2101 / Fiat rear axle with disc brakes on it I'm using tractor PTO parts and joints so I can lift the unit up and move forward in relation to the center of the rear wheel hubs. This will increase the clearance of the vehicle and makes it possible to remove and repair / or replace the entire differential steering unit completely if needed. This project will continue with fabricating the undercarriage, idler wheel axles and the tub itself. Stay tuned for more next week, make sure to watch the previous episodes in this series, subscribe to be up to date with new videos, comment and share your thoughts and ideas, also share the video if you liked it. Thanks for watching! Oh yeah, I completely forgot about the rough 3D model I sketched up in a CAD program I wanted to include in this video so if anybody wants to know what I am actually building feel free to Google the title "Tracked Amphibious Vehicle" and you'll see what I have in mind. See you next time!

Very interesting project! From my experience with 4x4's, I believe the weakest point in your drivetrain is the u-joints, especially with a severe angle. I would like to see how long they last. Great fabrication video!

On the drive shaft, the things you're calling forks need to be in phase with each other. Otherwise you'll get vibration and short u-joint life. If you need more angle, use CV joints. Or for even more angle, use double cardan joint.

Personally i would have added centering lip to support the rim. Think how much force goes into those mere 4 bolts when its driven and turning. You end up snapping bolts eventually with some corrosion eating the treads and rim with tracks is at worse case bottom of the lake.

The less angle on the joints the better. Also making sure you phase time the yokes is very important.

we had axles like this on our tank (bradley APC) in the military, they were called half shafts, we had to remove them if ever we needed to be towed. i guess so it wouldnt mess up the transmission. my question is this....why go through all this effort instead of just a solid drive axle? im just trying to weigh the pros and cons or if a solid drive is even possible. great video, thanks.

Hey, the idea behind my design is getting brakes "indoor" so there's less wear on the brake pads and rotors. Also with this design the clearance from the ground is a little bit bigger. That's about it. It can be done more simple for sure. I just want to try it out this way.

I do the longer the shaft the more agle u can get but ur limited on length so if the pto shafts dont work try a double joint yoke

For reliability no more than 20 degrees for UJ's and they must be aligned, if you want more then you need CV joints.

It’s called “ Monel” boat/ship builder use it for prop shafts and stearin linkage. Very low carbon high nickel type of stainless that’s why there’s little sparks. It should bet tug welded but with your mig use a nickel fill with straight argon.

I was interested in the shape of the bottom. Resistance in water can be large, but the most important thing: if the walls are then vertical, then how to put tracks on drive wheels? If the width of the track is equal to the thickness of the wheel, then why such indentation of the remaining wheels from the walls?

I seen your video attached the hubs to the frame and at the end you put the diff in, why didn't you make the frame so the diff is in a straight line with the driving hubs? Now your going to have to replace u joints now and then, that angle wears a bit faster.
