Latest video:
In this episode I'm starting the final assembly on my homemade tracked amphibious vehicle. I'm fabricating a new hood scoop for the otherwise vulnerable to elements engine bay cooling fan, making the engine and gearbox frame lighter and slightly modifying it to make the CVT belt tensioning easier. I'm also adding a car alternator with a custom belt tensioning system to make the charging system cope with two 12 V winches and all the lights on board. Cleaning and painting the differential brake steering unit without the side brakes on, installing the engine and the gearbox and starting to button up the rest of the vehicle. In the next episode we will ride this thing! Stay tuned!

Donn DIY man I love this project. Your doing such a fantastic job. I only wish I could see it in person. Or better yet. Go for a ride with you lol. Maybe pull some trees out. Also love your woods trailer with the grapple. My brother is rebuilding a bombardier from I think the 70’s. It’s pretty cool too. Has an old flat head he just got done rebuilding from the ground up. It’s a Chrysler spitfire if memory serves me. Going to be used to pull wood out. As we go through tons with the outdoor wood furnace we use to heat both our shops. Thanks for taking the time to video the process man. Keep it up. Your doing great work!!! Ian. Vinalhaven Maine.

Now that the project is completed, and a marvellous job you did by the way, I just wanted to know what you intended to do for your next project? How about a manned mission to Mars? With your incredible ability to think outside the box and how you seem to be able to engineer your way out of trouble so often, I can’t help thinking that it’s right in your “to do” file !!!

So, do you think the engine and transmission from a 2005 BMW R1200ST 1,170cc Horizontally opposed twin Air cooled motorcycle that is a shaft drive would work for something like this? I might know where a wrecked one is with just the frame twisted and the forks torn off.
Will Wade
Will Wade 8 місяців tagasi
@Donn DIY That's not it for me. I just happen to know where one is and I was thinking of trying to buy it off the guy if it was a feasible option. It doesn't have a revers function but I know of a couple of companies that make Reverse Gear packages for motorcycle driven roadsters that would give me a reverse option.
Donn DIY
Donn DIY 8 місяців tagasi
Absolutely. I know a guy who used a smaller 650 cc BMW Rotax engine on a tracked vehicle and it worked also great. I don't really know why people in general are obsessed with huge engines with a lot of torque and horsepower. Maybe because of the mighty RipSaw. 😁

this has been an awesome build with above most peoples skill level but, what else would you think if it wasn't ? I would like o know is 1_ why didnt you just use the clutch that the transmision would usually have with he engine it was mated with instead of the very pricy cvt that you used ? 2- What is the final cost of the build not including your labor cost if a DI Yer could buld one ? His has been an awesome build and, i cant wait to see you go and put it through a workout !
Donn DIY
Donn DIY 8 місяців tagasi
Would've had to build something to house the flywheel of the original engine where the original clutch is mounted to. Original flywheel however is really heavy. And CVT acts as a clutch and give more gear ratios to choose from in the mud. I don't know the whole cost yet - the new engine was the most expensive part in this build but I hope it's worth it.

Been following this for a while. Can't wait to see it finished. I really hope the drive wheels don't just spin round inside the tracks when in mud or going uphill. Usually on vehicles with tracks over rubber wheels all the wheels are driven, or the tracks are driven by a separate toothed drive sprocket. Do you have any backup plans if this turns out to be an issue? ...I made a tracked 'wheelchair' once and added chains & sprockets connecting all the wheels on each side so they were all driven as this was something I was worried about. You'd have to put the chains & sprockets on the outside of the wheels with your axle setup, which would work but would look a bit janky.
James Bradwell
James Bradwell 8 місяців tagasi
Sort of, but a chain has positive engagement with the drive sprocket via the teeth. The tracks on yours (and argocats for example) could be considered more like a belt being driven by a smooth pulley (several driven pulleys in the case of Argos). Belts & pulleys rely on belt tension creating friction between the pulley & belt. But yeah, should be fine so long as track tension is high enough.
Donn DIY
Donn DIY 8 місяців tagasi
Tires are not going to spin. The track itself is a large chain if you think about it. 😉
