Felling aspen to make seat, steps and floor grate for the sauna steam room after it is cut on the homemade band sawmill. Now it has to dry a little and I will build the seat out of green wood letting it dry afterwards. I don't care about the cracks or anything, it gives the seat more character in my opinion. The blade got dull and I sharpened it with an angle grinder which is a bad plan since it's hard to replicate the exact grinding movement on every tooth by hand and it pretty much screws up the blade really fast. I also had an incident where the blade left its position on the blade wheels due to over adjusting the toe in / toe out of the band wheels and the blade took off into orbit but all good. The guards work well, couldn't imagine working on the mill without guards installed. Since the blade chewed on the saw head steel carrier frame it started to climb in the wood a little due to the wrecked teeth on the outside of the blade. I will probably upload the blade incident separately. The blade has already paid for itself and I can discard it when there's a need for it. I will order 10 more blades and start using them one by one and maybe get them sharpened in town by someone with a sharpening machine until I get to the point where I'll build myself a sharpener. We'll see. Thanks for watching and stay tuned for future videos!

Very nice project, great job! watching it for few days now, i think you should turn your logs so the center crack is more horisontal so that only central boards will catch it but not all of them

I like the back and upper guides you have, but without a roller to keep the leading edge of the blade from being able to take a dive under stress, it can take a downward deflection. I noticed you mentioned something about you being paranoid about it doing a dive condition.

YOUR BLADE IS NOT TIGHT ENOUGH, ALSO PUT A BLADE ROLLER GUIDE BELOW THE BLADE ALSO TO NEGATE TO SOME DEGREE THE BLADE CUTTING DOWN ON LOG... THE UTUBE MENSA

Hi Donn, really nice job! I have quickly seen your saw mill project and have one qustion. How do you safe a saw blade on rounded moto wheels? Only by blade guides? I will by scare about a drop off blade. I´m sorry if you are talked about that in some older videos. Thanks!

The blade is staying on the wheels by tracking. The wheels are set up in a manner which makes the blade run on them true without getting "derailed". Also the curved surface of the motorcycle wheels helps a lot since the surface line speed in the center of the tire is always greater and it grabs the blade more in the center like on old curved flat belt pulleys on steam engines. There has to be the edge on the guide rollers to support the side forces when cutting but other than those guide rollers the band wheels themselves don't have to have a guiding edge at all.

Hullult hea oleks swingblade kelk lisana lintsaele mu saeraami raudtee peale. :D
Donn DIY
Donn DIY 2 aastat tagasi
Swingblade on hea voodrilaua jm väikse ristlõikega materjali lõikuseks. Lintsaeraam on ses mõttes universaalsem kodumajapidamisse. A see ainult mu isiklik arvamus ja eelistus.

Sure do enjoy watching you gathering wood for lumber and firewood. I like how the things you built are doing a good job for you. Keep the videos coming, we enjoy them. It has been quite a number of years since I have see Aspen trees that size, it is awesome being around trees that big.

Cheers man, I'm glad someone is enjoying these videos, otherwise I wouldn't make'em. I had my eyes on these two Aspen trees for several years, I think even already when I still had my stationary chain sawmill. I'm glad I got to them only now, and didn't have to take down both of them, although the one cut was a bit rotten at the bottom. I guess the other one is too. Might as well use it for a good purpose.

Ilmselt küll, aga see tera oli juba nüri enne saagimise alustamist. Mul on lihtsalt teritajat tarvis. ;)

You should put a blade guide on the inlet bearing. I noticed that your blade has a lot of flexing in it. I sure do like that sawmill. I've seen a lot of videos with them using car tires, but it looks like motorcycle tires do better.

I'll have to go back and watch them again. I just like the way you made yours. It's just nice seeing a young man doing stuff like what you are doing. Most of them would rather play video games and junk.

No dramas, I support people who say they would do something different and actually do it. This is just how I wanted and could build a mill for myself. It's not perfect by far but it works very well for me. I hope you have a great build also. I assure you it is very rewarding. ;)

@Donn DIY I still like how you built your mill. I hope you didn't think that I was cutting down your mill, quite the opposite. I would like to make one like yours.

These spoke wheels are in quite bad shape - rims are eccentric compared to the hubs so that's why there's that wavy look to the blade. I've already acquired alloy wheels but haven't had the chance to change'em.

One tip I have for cutting logs that are already starting to crack on the ends - try to rotate the log so the crack runs horizontally. So it’ll end up being in one of the thickness cuts of the boards, instead of the width of the board. So the crack will only effect one or two boards instead of all of them. The crack in the log you cut wasn’t too bad, it’s more noticeable when there’s a huge deep crack. If any of that makes sense lol
