Hey. I have one warning about using breake cleaner and than welding on that surface. If you use breake cleaner it seams that everythinh vapours up. But it doesn't. When you go weld on that chromium vapours are made. And chrome is one of the worst thing for your brain cells. That gas kills the most brain cells. So stay away from breake cleaner when welding. The best thing to use is acetone. I really hope you see that comment.

I looked at the space and cost of a fully equipped PC. monitor, keyboard and mouse and opted for an offline controller instead with a MPG pendant. PC is in the air conditioned office for design. An offline controller can replace the CNC PC and breakout board. A 4 axis controller such as the DDCSV2.1 is about the cost of just Mach 3 license. I take the G-Code files on a thumb drive, plug it in, use the pendant to home and probe, then clear the DRO, and start. An offline controller without pendant is a little over $160. With a pendant, it is a little over 200, but you probably want a MPG pendant anyway. Great build. Are you using Mach 3 or Mach 4 or some other CNC software? I've started playing with Linux CNC, but as a real time CNC, it does not work with USB serial breakout boards, so you need a real parallel printer port and breakout board. The parallel break out boards for 4 axis is very inexpensive, often under $10. The cable cost more than the breakout board.

Nice setup. My only complaint is actually for your safety. If you fancy having a ring, I'd take it off in a shop. Nothing worse than seeing the skin peel off like a gloved finger. I have seen it during my service in the armed forces. Not a pretty sight although pretty amazing how it just peeled off leaving nothing but the flesh. You never forget. ☺

RGTuning

Brakecleaner is very dangerous stuff when using it before welding, not because its flamable. The residue of the brake cleaner will transform into Phosgene Gas that will kill. This gas was even used in the WWII because it is so deadly.

With an appropriate paint, you can paint the inside of the pan; and the result will look better; however as mentioned below; an anti-rust additive will allow you to leave it unpainted. Or you could do both.

You dont need to have a conductive tank, if you do decide to paint, make sure it is cleaned thoroughly primed and painted completely. If there is the slightest crack in the paint, water will get in and corrode from the inside, worse than being unpainted.

in theory you'll be fine painting the inside bottom and up the sides an inch or so provided the slats keep a ground by touchting bare metal from the bottom somewhere or the sides if your burning paint off you don't have enough water anyway

It is a good idea to paint the pan interior. The cutting current could establish electrolysis and introduce rust and erossion. Current should flow trough metal only (sacrificial plates on which the cuted material rests) and not trough water. Great job!!!

Little upset Donn... I haven't got my plane tickets to go help you on the builds. I could as important questions like Why Donn or are you going to grind it too Donn and other various questions that mean little but aggravate a lot. I was supposed to cut some stuff too and if I got bored then go out and take stuff off your truck or how ever you got there so you had to fix to go home? Ah to be so young again...seventy three is not a fun age by looking at how easy that you get around.
