Taking apart our family car blown up engine to see what happened. Even though I could see everything pretty well through the hole in the engine block I wanted to part this engine to see the damage closer. The connecting rod broke for some reason just before I was heading to the technical inspection with this car and for the first time in my life I experienced what it feels like when a car engine blows up while driving. There was parts flying - broken connecting rod bashed holes in the engine block, broke the starter motor and gearbox bell housing and poke a couple of holes in the sump leaving me stranded with a black oil stripe following the car to the side of the road in a cloud of smoke. It was epic. I'm glad it didn't happen during the inspection. :)

@Donn DIY It cracked and broke at the transition zone between the smaller end and the "shank "on the connecting rod. It's certainly because of fatigue, those rods are forged i guess, and maybe a stress point was created while forging it. It's the thinner zone on rods there, and indirect injection engines like that have a huge compression ratio. Old out of specs injectors pissing a bit too early cause the equivalent of detonation and generally you can see pitting on the piston itself just under the prechamber ,that's why those indirect injection are noisy. If you have a cold start advance stuck on,you have way more injection advance and it's like on gas engines, too much is not good and create again "detonation" and a bunch of vibrations ,wich go directly on the rod small end (the most fragile part...) It's just no luck i think, looks like there is not much blowby wich passed through the rings, pistons look clean. www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fars.els-cdn.com%2Fcontent%2Fimage%2F1-s2.0-S1350630715301655-gr1.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sciencedirect.com%2Fscience%2Farticle%2Fpii%2FS1350630715301655&docid=I7NV6H_XwQTJiM&tbnid=1hGjTxJ8C6VthM%3A&vet=10ahUKEwjyusH45PDjAhUCqxoKHXrtCTwQMwhRKBAwEA..i&w=329&h=232&client=firefox-b-d&bih=983&biw=1920&q=conrods%20fracture%20fatigue&ved=0ahUKEwjyusH45PDjAhUCqxoKHXrtCTwQMwhRKBAwEA&iact=mrc&uact=8

Here in Canada small diesels are real rare .Most of the diesels are in some of the 3/4 ton pick ups and larger .You could even up to a few years ago get a 8L gas in a chev 3/4 . Know most 3/4 are 6.2 L gas My self have never owned a Diesel .Been around them my hole life in heavy equipment. Know most of the cars are 1.5 L and up tutbo Gas.Not a huge turbo fan unless it's on a piece of eqpment .My personal truck is a 5.3L gas about 14L per 100Km .Gas Is $1.20 per L here government taxes the hell out of it.

it's a naturally aspirated diesel with a rotary pump. Head has 8 valves using just tappets. They don't get much simpler than that...
Morgan Adair

I was very poor and had a block that needed a crank and some pistons/stuff. I used the crank from the blown one with all the pins and rings, I reused the bearings with shime stock behind the bearings and the rods from the two engines with the best I had to work with in the engines and even some of the best oil I had to make it stretch. I soaked the head gasket in hot water and bolted it together not really torquing much but the head gasket held and the others were mostly rite stuff gasket compete except the oil seals were new and the filters were. The next morning I hit the switch and it rattled a bit then smoothed out and it lasted for another couple of years w here I put money aside to get a new engine. That rebuild out of jusk still cost forty dollars and was worth every penny spent. I pulled it running still and checked the bearings which looked like brass but no loss for oil pressure an got me through. What shouldn't of worked did and lasted till I bought a brand new engine
