Installing an aftermarket continuously variable transmission on a front wheel drive Peugeot Partner five speed gearbox by turning adapter bushings in the lathe and welding the inside of the original clutch plate to the CVT so it fits the clutch shaft. To get the power from the left half axle of the Peugeot Partner gearbox into the differential skid steering unit made from LADA 2101 axle in the back of the tracked amphibious vehicle I take apart the differential in the Peugeot gearbox and weld it shut. To finish off the rear axle with indoor brakes system I'm fabricating axle dampers out of 12 mm steel sheet and tractor PTO parts. The shocks that might occur in the rear axle while braking and accelerating through the differential are hopefully absorbed by the freshly made axle dampers with rubber bushings that take the beating instead of the steel parts in the driveline. Next stop - supporting the clutch shaft / CVT shaft on the front end, engine mounts, prop shaft and then I can continue building the frame and tub / hull.

Oui, des cardans homocinétiques comme ceux du Peugeot Partner (par exemple) seraient bien préférables (non seulement plus simples et plus économiques) car ce montage risque de casser. En effet, le pont de la Lada n'est pas aligné avec l'axe des roues motrices : en hauteur (bien sûr) et horizontalement (roues motrices en arrière du pont). D'autre part les tiges cannelées et les cardans pour machines agricoles induisent du jeu et ne supportent pas les vitesses élevées (ceci malgré les "axle dampers" en caoutchouc). Ce montage fragile rappelle celui des 2 CV Citroën (jusqu'au milieu des années 60) dont les cardans simples cassaient souvent. Et encore sur ces 2 CV la sortie de boîte des vitesse était-elle à peu près alignée avec l'axe des roues. Je dis "à peu près" car, avec les bras de suspension, l'axe des roues décrit sur les 2 CV non pas une ligne verticale mais un arc de cercle. Dans le cas de cet Amphibie chenillé les roues motrices (comme les autres bien sûr) ne sont pas suspendues. Ça peut limiter la casse... et puis cet amphibie ne va pas bien vite. Et puis on ne demande pas à ce jeune Estonien de réaliser un truc parfait. Nobody is perfect !

looks nice and a nice project! instead of a cvt u could also try a vario transmission. instead of welding the diff, u just breake one of the outputs and connect the other to your load. depending on the braking force of the first the second output allows a variable speed.

Awesome as always! The axle damper are going to work great... I think. The way you built the damper was really clever... My only thought, for what it's worth, is maybe the nuts and bolts used to bolt the axle damper together. I'm thinking the nuts and bolts should be case hardened, grade 8. Maybe the one you used are and I just couldn't tell. Or I could be totally wrong. Regular hardware made from mild steel may be plenty strong enough. But from what I've seen and experienced in life, grade 8 would be the way to go. I'm only a shade tree mechanic, wood working is my specialty, so like I said... I could be mistaken. Does anyone that is more qualified know? If so maybe you drop a response... Even if it's just for me, lol. Because I'd like to know for sure myself. But everything is awesome, I really appreciate and like your videos. Keep them coming!

It takes a bit to get one's head around variable drive belt alignments - doesn't it, as - first glance it LOOKS to be wrong, then after some thought - of course, one HAS to open in reverse to the other, as NEITHER will be fully open - (or fully closed either for that matter) - at precisely the same time. SO - the Gearbox pulley WILL ALWAYS BE - slightly rearwards of the front variable pulley - as when the front pulley is FULLY CLOSED (and it's V-belt centerline alignment - is forward of the 50% open alignment centerline) - the gearbox receiver pulley will be FULLY OPEN (and thus also the bottom of that V will also be FORWARDS of the 50% open centerline alignment). Keeping the V-Belt perfectly aligned between the two pulleys without undue sideways flexing. As one pulley opens - the other closes - front to back "shifting" - the entire alignment of the V-Belt - until the correct speed is attained - thus at no time will the V-Belt itself be physically twisting when moving form one pulley to the other, whereas the actual "parallel" centerline will shift (together) at both pulleys - either forwards or backwards .. to keep the V-Belt perfectly aligned at all times. With the V-Belt at the rearwards alignment - the drive pulley will be fully pen and rev'ing hard - whilst the gearbox pulley will be as if at rest - and fully open yet with the slowest rotational speed. Hence low speed of vehicle when driven. As the inertia from moving the LOAD comes off the V-belt drive system, the drive pulley will try CLOSING - thereby pushing the V-belt forwards on it's variable pulley's lay-shaft axle expanding that drive pulley as it physically moves the belt forwards too. As the driven V-belt moves forwards and tightens around an ever increasing diameter of the V-Pulley driver It thus tightens across the rear variable pulley's circumference - & pulls the V-belt itself, down further into the V of the gearbox Variable pulley - thereby expanding that forwards (see I had to think a little as to why it opens opposite to the driver). At the position when the driver variable pulley is fully CLOSED with the V-gap tightest) the V-belt will be as tight as it can be at the driver pulley end, so will also then be sitting as NEAR to the bottom (almost on the gearbox layshaft) of that variable pulley - which by then will now be fully open - and thus have the widest V-gap it can offer). At the point - the driven variable pulley's rotation will be extremely amplified into the gearbox layshaft - with a result of massively increasing the rotational speed of the gearbox input shaft - hence the need for the different GEARS in the gearbox itself. To further SLOW the gearbox input shaft rotations to the output drive shaft - that goes to the rear diff. This allows the V-belt to stay parallel to BOTH variable pulleys as they expand-retract to open &close whilst maintaining the same V-belt length and the identical alignment of the V-belt to whichever pulley it runs on too. PLUS - gives the motor output shaft - a means of absorbing any VIOLENT drag on the drive system, caused by L&R turn braking - or by full braking - which will simply result in the variable pulleys taking the impact - and reverting to a slower driven gearbox speed - via the V-belt sitting in the variable pulley's itself, before the motor takes the excess load, or is slowed to idle by the adjustment of the operator's accelerator/throttle setting. What a brilliant drive system..

Интересно работаешь болгаркой (мне надо учиться)...но ! мотовездеход, квадроцикл, ATV это другие шины (да и наверное колеса вообще ..там как правило весь конструктив берется под шины низкого давления) а отсюда короткие и сама база и оси ...Вес в такой технике имеет если не решающее , то немало важное значение ...сам пытаюсь сделать что то типа квадроцикла..но колеса и кулаки ось(задняя) да и маятник будет (уже точно ) от квадра Ямаха юфз 450 ...думаю что к сухим 200 кг я уложусь...мотор 400сс 30 коней.(тяжелый зараза) 60 кг...(но Японец) чуть легче очень кусается в цене...Видео отличного качества..хорошо бы на продолжения было бы глянуть...Удачных покатушек..

What keeps the damper halves together is it only the part of the washer that extends beyond the 32mm hole ,how thick is those washers ?

The bolt in the center that the halves pivot on and also those washers a bit if that bolt fails. Washers don't touch the steel at the moment.

You continue to amaze me sir. Your enginering mindset is mindblowing and you can actually get it done. Awesomesauce or as my wife and I now say: pretty good. :) If you would like some feedback: the captions where you explain something could stay a bit longer for me. The captions where you describe what we already see on the screen (like painting the parts for example) are for me distracting. Do not know if people agree, just my personal experience.

They have a similar dampener on my bush hog but instead it is just one piece of rubber between to flat plates with bolts through it. It is a lot simpler. Yours looks very nice though.

Hi, I notized that the brake rotors are realy close to the floor, could it not be a problem in rough terrain if the bottom is pressed up into the rotors making a "drain".

I welded the diff on the gearbox so I can use one of the outgoing half axles as propshaft to the other differential in the rear of the vehicle.
