Introduction to a new fabrication and metal working series - a four wheel drive utility vehicle build to lessen the work load on my trusty 2002 Honda Foreman Rubicon TRX500FA. This partially answers the question "Why?" but for those who want to ask "why don't you just buy a side-by-side instead of building one?" I just want to say - I'm not made of money. Side by sides are ridiculously expensive, even the car I drive around daily is worth less (not worthless though!), hell, it is even worth less than my 2002 Honda ATV.
"How much HP will it have?" - the 1.4 litre FWD petrol engine I'm planning on using has 55 kw and this will not change, but the torque will be quadrupled via the FWD differential I'm using to transfer power to front and rear diff.
"It will be too heavy!" - this project just like the firewood processor project does not have to float. And a heavier vehicle will handle better anyway when hauling heavy loads.
In this first video I'm disassembling two BMW E39 independent rear suspensions to get the differential and half axles out, scraping together parts I have laying around and looking for an engine donor. Stay tuned for future episodes! Thanks for watching!

To all the people asking "why build, just buy it", you're what's wrong with society today, your thinking is very narrow and sheltered. You'd rather just go and buy something than make it if you can. I understand not everyone can go out and fabricate something, but this dude obviously can. We've seen what he's done on his channel and it's nothing short of amazing. If you've done anything other than move your lazy fingers across a keyboard, you'd realize this.

This is the way. I would never, ever buy a pre-made product, made in this decade, they are cheaply made, and sold stupid expensive. A few automotive bloggers online did various parts/cost analysis on ATVs a few years ago and in some cases, big brands ask you to pay almost twice their investment (because off the shelf parts). Which essentially means you'd pay the branding more than the quality. Hell no. DIY is the way, especially with the tons of options on the market for second hand self contained solutions from brands like BMW, Suzuki, Subaru, Honda etc. I was watching another channel (name escapes me atm) and i did a serious inquiry to see just how much it would run me to follow in his 3x3 atv's footsteps and it's less than the cost of a freaking second hand side-by-side or large ATV from 2010 and up. So for those who ask, why? Because you'd be insane to do otherwise. Insane and ruined when the junk breaks apart because it was built as cheap as humanely possibly to save costs. /rant based on your rightly written description rant.

Wont one end drive wrong way? You might have to flip the diff over. I've seen a photo of that done on a project. They'd built up a brazed spigot for a new drain onto the bottom and used the old drain to fill it.
Donn DIY
Donn DIY 3 місяці tagasi
By turning the diff over this problem is already solved since both diffs are identical and the ring gear is on the same side, when turned around the ring gear is on opposite sides and the drive shaft turns the opposite way.. No need to flip it over upside down anymore.

I built one with this configuration 40 years ago. Front diff upside down and the rear diff bolted straight to the motor. My motor was a Morris 1100. Beware though, the gearing is too low unless of course you chain drive it onto your drive shaft to gear it up. This will be interesting, your a lot better engineer than I ever was.
Donn DIY
Donn DIY 3 місяці tagasi
I don't want to build a fast machine so I'm not worried about the gearing. The tires will be quite alot taller compared to the original ones too which should compensate the low gearing a little.

Since both those diffs are rear diffs won't one spin the opposite direction since its flipped around?
LesNewell 3 місяці tagasi
The gearbox output shafts effectively spin in opposite directions (if you are looking at the gearbox from each end) so this cancels out the diff.

Would it not be easier to utilize those BMW axles that you already have?, just build frame around the auxiliary frames, get set of BMW steel rims, take from center and mount it to truck rims and go Slav on the tires making low pressure tires out of them for great grip in mud and high ground clearance? Of course depending on what kind of loads you are planning on pulling with this.

Diff pinion gears don't like to be run backwards for long under load. Might not be an issue with a light buggy that gets used twice a year. You could try flipping the front diff upside down
LesNewell 3 місяці tagasi
It's not a problem. The rear wheels provide most of the drive when going forward. The fronts provide most of the drive when going backward and then the front diff is loaded correctly.

Dont forget to mount one differential upside down to make sure all wheels turn in the same direction. If you mount them like you put them on the floor you will end up with a vehicle that doesn't move because the wheels will be turning in opposite directions...
Max Dolly
Max Dolly Місяць tagasi
@Donn DIY Yes, kinematics will work properly this way. But the front differential will be operating still in "reverse gear mode" when driving forward. How will be able hypoid gear handle it? I mean whistling and faster wear. We will see. Anyway it is a homemade UTV project and this couldn't any matter. Good luck!
Donn DIY
Donn DIY 3 місяці tagasi
Draw out the drivetrain like this on paper and you'll see - You don't have to flip anything upside down. The front differential will be turned around thus moving the ring gear on the other side compared to the rear diff. And all is good.
