4x4 Build Ep.2 - FWD Engine To Four Wheel Drive

Latest video: eepost.info/my/video/o2-LdnVnopKFuos.html
A four wheel drive utility vehicle build to lessen the work load on my trusty 2002 Honda Foreman Rubicon TRX500FA. This partially answers the question "Why?" but for those who want to ask "why don't you just buy a side-by-side instead of building one?" I just want to say - I'm not made of money. Side-by-sides are ridiculously expensive, even the car I drive around daily is worth less (not worthless though!), hell, it is even worth less than my 2002 Honda ATV.
"How much HP will it have?" - the 1.4 litre FWD petrol engine I'm planning on using has 55 kw and this will not change, but the torque will be tripled via the BMW differentials I'm using to transfer power to front and rear axles.
"It will be too heavy!" - this project just like the firewood processor project does not have to float. And a heavier vehicle will handle better anyway when hauling heavy loads.
In this second video I'm pulling apart the 1.4 petrol Peugeot Partner to get the engine, swing arms, half axles, struts etc. Stay tuned for future episodes! Thanks for watching!

Want more.... One of the best channels that I have watch all of the videos! This is going to be a super awesome build. I have always wanted to build a 2 wheel drive version from a Geo Metro, which has a very light weight front wheel drive 3 cylinder engine. The price for a side by side cost as much as a brand new cheapest car about 10k USD upwards to 20k USD. Even used ones still cost between 5k USD and upwards. What one gets from building their own is a style that works for their application, better parts, better speed and cheaper parts. Ever try and fix a side by side and the parts cost quire a bit more. Can not wait to see your frame build. I really like how one of my friends builds frames for his hot rod cars. He builds them with box tube and then welds plates inside the box tube so that one can drill and tap in to 3/8 plate along with the tube wall thickness. On of his car builds uses mostly bolts and very few nuts.

Also you going to weld the center diff? Any plans on making this 4 wheel steered setup? Rear could be steered with hydraulics pretty easily.

This van is front wheel drive only, the quarter panels are rotten and the body is really heavy, and attaching BMW differentials to the body is tricky. It is more simple to build a custom frame.

This is going to be a great build. Was wondering if you are going to all wheel steering on this project or will you just lock out the back struts? Maybe add a hydraulic pump to the engine and put a simple ram on the rear with a hand controlled valve to move the rear left and right. It could make it easier to get into tight areas but that's my thoughts and this is your build that I get to have fun watching.
Hill On Wheels
Hill On Wheels 3 місяці tagasi
@Donn DIY I was just thinking about your reply and if you put struts so the steering part of the knuckle is on the back side of the diff and connect them with a bar with simple bushings near the ends, then attach the tie rods to the ends of the bar and attach the ram in the center of the bar it would be away from the drive shaft. The control arms would have to be shifted slightly rear wards to hopefully clear the back of the differential cover. This all sounds good to me but I don't know how much room you have in the back so none of this may work at all. In the end what you do for this build will work out great and I will be watching.

Hei! Kes sul need videod kõik kokku monteerib? Siis küsimus pigem aja planeerimisest ehk kui palju sul kulub aega "leiutamisele" ja reaalselt valmistamisele ja videote montaažile? Millal sa magad :D
Donn DIY
Donn DIY 3 місяці tagasi
Ise monteerin, tavaliselt laupäeviti. Esmaspäevast reedeni teen tööd - kahjuks mitte küll ainult ühe projekti kallal. Seega jääb alles ainult pühapäev, millal ma emmigi ei tee ja väljas võrkkiiges vedeleda saan. Öösel magan. 😁 "Leiutamine" ehk käsilevõetud projekti jõllitamine ja sellele mõtlemine käed taskus moodustab umbes poole projektile kulutatud ajast, kaamera nurga muutmine võtab ka aega. Õnneks jääb päriselt praktilise töö tegemiseks ka ikka aega. 😁

Looks interesting. I always toss the tires and wheels under the vehicle for extra safety. Then if something does let loose it doesn't hit the ground. As far as the engine and drivetrain consider a hydraulic drive system. You could then use the hyrdaulic system to power implements and such. You could even decide to drive more axles if you wanted to build a trailer with power assist. And welding the spiders in the axles would give true all wheel drive but not be as hard on the engine when turning. Can also have both axles with the pumpkins facing any direction you wanted and no need for a transfer case of any sort.

I love what the little skid steer can do for you. Just a little more ballast on the butt and this would really be hard to beat with another machine (fork truck, tractor, etc.) Glad to see the car didn't decide to roll, slide or drop on you. Makes for excellent video, but not such a good day for you. :-O Just wondering ... did you consider just taking the bulk of the body off the Peugeot and starting from there? Removing the upper body and interior would still give you a substantial start on the frame, suspension, and stuff. Maybe ... or not. Your mileage may vary.

If you are running the BMW rear diff in the front, you are forever running it in reverse. It will turn the correct direction when driving forward, but it will be noisy, and more importantly, will wear out very quickly. The helical gear cut in the differential is cut for one primary direction of travel. Perhaps this is intended as a very light duty application, the UTV will not be very heavy, travel very quickly, or be used very often. I do not think these drive line components would hold up for long in most other applications. Not saying it wont work for what you are doing, but it certainly wouldn't hold up in a rock crawler for example.
